Director of Para Athletics
Job Summary:
The Gig Harbor Canoe and Kayak Racing Team is seeking a passionate and motivated individual to lead the research, development, and feasibility study for our Para Athletics program. The Director of Para Athletics will play a key role in expanding opportunities for athletes of all abilities, ensuring that individuals with physical and/or mental challenges have access to inclusive and competitive paddling programs. This is a stipend paid position that requires initiative, strong organizational skills, and a commitment to creating a welcoming and supportive environment for all participants. This position is currently funded by a Names Family Foundation grant. Upon review of the program development and feasibility study, GHCKRT intends to make this a permanent position pending grant award/fund development.
Key Responsibilities:
Research and Build Upon Past Success:
Investigate and document the team’s connections, resources, and successes in para-athletics from 2012-2019.
Identify key stakeholders, past athletes, and community supporters involved in the prior program.
Utilize past experiences to inform and shape the new para-athletics program.
Outreach and Athlete Recruitment:
Develop and implement an outreach plan to identify and recruit potential para-athletes.
Engage with local schools, community organizations, and disability advocacy groups to promote awareness and participation in the program.
Program Development and Collaboration:
Build partnerships with the Peninsula School District, PenMet Parks, and YMCA to create inclusive paddling and recreation programming.
Coordinate with community partners like Outdoors For All to develop resources, facilities, and programming that support para-athletes.
Organize and oversee training sessions, clinics, and competitions tailored for para-athletes.
Committee Creation and Fundraising:
Establish a dedicated committee to provide support, fundraising, and program oversight.
Develop and execute a fundraising plan to secure sustainable funding for the para-athletics program, including grants, sponsorships, and events.
Community Engagement and Advocacy:
Act as an advocate for inclusion and para-athletics in the local and regional community.
Represent GHCKRT at community events, conferences, and meetings to promote the para-athletics program.
Cultivate relationships with families, athletes, and supporters to foster a strong sense of community within the program.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience or knowledge of the sport of canoe and kayak, particularly sprint racing.
Passion for working with individuals with diverse abilities, including physical and mental challenges.
Proven ability to develop and execute outreach plans and community-based programming.
Experience in fundraising, grant writing, or donor relations.
Strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills.
Ability to build and sustain collaborative relationships with stakeholders, community organizations, and public agencies.
Compensation:
This is a limited duration paid position, funded by a generous grant from the Names Family Foundation. Timeline for work will be discussed with finalists. Compensation will be based on experience and qualifications.
