GHCKRT Camps provide opportunities for kids to explore canoe and kayak paddling in a safe and fun environment where they will receive personal instruction from America's best coaches and paddlers! Some camp paddlers may be invited to continue paddling on the Gig Harbor Canoe and Kayak Racing Team's Development Team this summer and fall. Coaches will be looking for paddlers who display a passion for the sport and exemplify a strong team work ethic.

Boats and paddles will be provided for our campers, and NO experience is required. Campers will be required to provide their own PFD (personal floatation device - life jacket). All camps take place at Skansie Brothers Park in downtown Gig Harbor.

Early registration is recommended as space is limited. Camps are held in June, July and August; Registration will open April 1.

*Camp participants should live in the South Kitsap, Peninsula, Tacoma, or University Place school districts.
*We will continue to follow the Department of Health and CDC recommendations regarding COVID-19 procedures and policies in our Summer Camp Program.

Frequently Asked CAMP Questions

Who can attend?  Camp participants should live in the South Kitsap, Peninsula, Tacoma, or University Place school districts and be between the ages of 10-13 at the time of camp.

What equipment does my child need to bring to camp?  All boats and paddles are provided. Campers will be required to provide their own PFD (personal floatation device). All Camp paddlers are required to wear a personal floatation device (life jacket) while on the water.

What else should my child bring?  Send your camper each day with a water bottle, large snack or lunch, sunscreen, towel, water shoes that strap to the feet and can get wet and muddy, tennis shoes for land warm-ups, and a change of clothes. We have no secure storage so please leave valuables at home.

What should my child wear?  Please have your child wear clothes they can get wet in. Most kids opt for (non-cotton) t-shirts/shorts worn over swimsuits. They may be wet at the end of practice, so having a change of clothes handy is helpful. Wearing extra layers if the weather warrants is advised as well.

Spring and Summer Campers get to paddle individual and team boats at camp!

Is paddling experience required?
Not at all. Every paddler on the Gig Harbor team started out in Summer Camp as a beginner. The campers will be using boats appropriate for their skill level that will allow them to have fun and learn a lot about the sport.

What supervision is provided?  There is both a coach and assistant coach for each camp session to provide instruction and supervision. In addition, we have experienced paddlers helping as mentors for the campers.

What opportunities are there to paddle after the week-long camp ends?  At the end of the camp session, qualified and interested campers may be invited on to the Development Team which starts in July and lasts until September.

What happens if camp is cancelled due to weather, etc.?  Coaches will cancel practice if there are heavy winds or lightning. In such cases every effort will be made to allow an extra make-up practice for the paddlers.

Who do I contact if I have questions?  There will be multiple opportunities during the camp session to talk to the coaches, including our Head Development Coach, Sadie Hanks. You can also contact our Camp parent coordinator, Kim Johnson regarding camp logistics and general team information.

What is your refund policy? If you need to cancel your registration, please contact our Camp Parent Coordinator via email: [email protected]

Please note our refund policy for Spring and Summer Camps:

  • Full refund of camp fees will be issued minus a 3% credit card processing fee in the event that camp must be canceled or if GHCKRT is unable to hold the camp.
  • If the camper cancels, a full refund minus 3% credit card processing fee will be issued IF GHCKRT is able to fill that camper's open space.  If that camper's space is not filled on or before the first day of the camp session, NO REFUND will be issued.

(Note:  If there are multiple cancellations, we base the open spot filling on chronological order of the cancellations.)
